AUTHORS' COMMENTS:

[Nunzio] This volume changes the direction of the series dramatically, and it all came about because Christina and I were discussing what to do with Tromperie once he was caught. We knew he had to be caught, because the villains of Volumes 4 & 5 needed to take center stage. But unlike Dr. Warren, this villain DID know what Von Brucken was up to. Which meant capturing him was not going to work or the heroes would know too. So we decided he had to die. This brought up lengthy talks with Shiei and Jason, because we all wanted to make sure the tone shift wouldn't be too jarring. But it became important to us that the notion of a spy having to kill be addressed. And we wanted the death to have an impact on Luna. So everything about this volume got shuffled. A new first chapter was added, and huge parts of our plans for the remainder of the story (Volumes 4 & 5) were shifted. What happens at the end of the Volume will shape the rest of this series, for Luna, for Control, for Dr. Andy, for everyone.

[Christina] Well, geez... Nunzio decided to be all down and depressing talking about death and all. I expected him to talk about how in this volume he got to see Control get all hot and sweaty while working out. Have I not mentioned Nunzio's crush on Control? But all kidding aside, Nunzio's right, we did go for a tone shift here. Luna's growing up and dealing with some serious things. However, we don't like to lose sight of the fun in this book too so we made sure to include moments like (one of my personal favorites) Oliver threatening Elizabeth with the notion that people might think they were dating. I think this volume also allowed us to show more of characters like Oliver and Mr. Dreyfus. Oliver really steps up and tries to go after the thing he wants - Luna. You have no idea how much courage it takes someone like Oliver to challenge someone like Jonah. And Mr. Dreyfus really starts to shine when he has to step in for Principal Ohlinger. He has no idea what he's getting into. And the end of this volume definitely changes his role in the series!

[Nunzio] Okay... I admit it. I totally have a crush on Control. Shiei - our wonderfully talented and incredibly sweet artist - drew a great sketch of Control for me at Comic-Con in 2006. I have it framed on the wall. She's hot!
